The University of Tennessee (UT) Soil Judging Team, affectionately known as the “Soil Vols” spent October 6th – 10th in Lexington, KY as part of the 2024 Southeastern Regional Collegiate Soils Contest, hosted by the University of Kentucky. As shown in the picture below, the students enjoyed studying the unique soil features of the Bluegrass Region, including loess, fragipans and slickensides. UT finished 4th overall out of 12 competing southeastern regional schools with one student, Callie Goodwin, finishing individually in the top 10. This tremendous result earned the Soil Vols a qualifying spot at the upcoming 2025 National Collegiate Soil Judging Contest to be hosted by the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, scheduled for next spring. Overall, it was an amazing week filled with so much hands-on experiential learning and memories for a lifetime. For more information on soil judging, please contact Andrew Sherfy.
