Climate Smart Agriculture

Climate smart agriculture is a suite of practices that famers implement that will enhance the sequestration of carbon into the soil, to reverse some of the negative environmental and climate related impacts from the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There are a number of management practices such as no-till and no-till in combination with winter cover crops, that farmers in Tennessee have been doing that are considered climate smart practices. These practices have been shown to increase the amount of carbon sequestered in the soil.

Other climate smart practices include mitigating or reducing the amount of greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. In row-crop systems in Tennessee nitrous oxide emissions are commonly found after the application of nitrogen fertilizers. These emissions can be reduced by selecting the correct fertilizer, applying it at the recommended rate and by the use of “nitrogen stabilizers” with our fertilizers, and changing the timing and application methods.
